You can adapt this trick to suit many situations.

I also have a small scripts that puts an icon in the tray on new mail
(using zenity), if anyone is interested.



And I used to trigger festival (speech syntehizer) on new mail (you can
even write a script that says the name of the sender and subject if you
have the patience).
