I don't have any answers for you at the moment.
Lets start here:

I suggest running "top" in a terminal and seeing if there is a particular
process causing trouble.

Go To: System Tools --> Terminal
type: top
hit: enter

Let us know what the top few processes are with cpu and memory usage.
