No sound on Intel ICH6-card

I can't remember the details of what I have tried, but I compiled the
kernel because what I tried was ending with an error message that the
modules have already been compiled in the kernel or something like
that.

Thanks.  In the end I found that there was also a hardware problem:
The audio plug in the front of the computer was not functioning.
Plugging the speakers in to the back of the PC worked!

At least I can deliver the PC now with the sound working.  Thanks
