Why recompile the whole kernel?
You can build the dvb modules (dvb-kernel) on its own, all you need is
the headers package for your kernel (eg. linux-headers-2.6.10-5-686 or
whatever).
Depending on your tuner card (eg. if it is bttv based), you may also
need a more recent video4linux "v4l" subsytem than that in 2.6.10.
This too can easily be built outside the kernel.
Details on how to do this should be available from the websites of
these projects. Let me know if you have trouble.
