-- I'm replying to my own question. I suddenly realize that the driver  
proposed by alsaconf was not so compabible after all. I looked for  
informationat http://www.alsa-project.org
and found out that for my sound card sold by Creative Labs the driver was  
snd-sbawe.
Thus, a simple
# modprobe snd-sbawe
then aumix-gtk for configuration purposes
and this time it worked (did not fail as previously)

It was simple.
Hoping it will help someone, for I saw on various lists that I was not the  
only one to wonder how...
