install nvidia drivers on hoary

I am in a similar boat.  I installed a fresh Hoary and the nv driver
works fine, but I want to run ET so I have tried to install the nvidia
drivers both via apt and via the .run package from nvidia.  When I
change my xorg.conf from device nv to nvidia it breaks my x!  I made
all appropriate changes to the xorg.conf, but nothing.  Modprobe nvidia
shows the module is loaded, but x will not start.
Ideas?  If you need me to post something, let me know!
