FWIW, you are not alone.  I did the same as you (followed directions,
etc) and had the same result as you.  However, rather then play around
with it and try to make it work, I just removed it and still use the
command line to switch wifi AP's when I move around.  Be nice to do it
in two mouse clicks, however, I didn't have the time to make it work.

So yeah, you're not alone on this.
