Suggestions for Ubuntu Article

On the whole "this and this is not installed by default" discussion, I
just found the following script that solves all problems mentioned:

Open a terminal session and enter:
$ wget http://download.ubuntuforums.org/ubuntusetup/ubuntusetup.sh
$ sudo sh ubuntusetup.sh
You will be asked to select "Yes" or "No" on various things you will
want to select yes on them.

It will ask to install all things mentioned here, as well as opening
up universe in Synaptic and more :-).

So back to Tom's original question then, yes, Ubuntu is ready for the
desktop. Just that all new users should run the script above as well.
