ubuntu a desktop OS?

As far as I am aware, Ubuntu is aimed at the desktop user, but, since it 
is based on Debian, there should be no major obstacles to tranforming it 
into something suitable for use as a server.

Personally I wouldn't bother. I would use it on the desktop and use 
something like Debian or SuSE or Mandrake or Fedora for the server.
