686-smp freezing

Sounds familiar. I just installed the k7-kernel, which worked well for
a few days, but now hangs at gdm somewhere. The menupanel loads as a
grey bar, but no icons or text appear and it just hangs. The
386-kernel starts up normally. So I'm also wondering if this is a
common problem and what might be a solution!
