help mounting usb hard drive formatted as ntfs

No, I've used it under windows for a year or two. Now that I've converted my
home desktop to linux, I want to mount the drive, copy everything off of it,
and then reformat it so linux can read & write to it.
I did the fdisk you mentioned (as root), but nothing happens:
root at valinor:/home/solemneyed # fdisk -l /dev/sda
root at valinor:/home/solemneyed #
