Hi solemneyed...
Is the USB hard drive by any chance *NOT* configured? In other words,
is there any partitions on it? From the outputs you posted, it appear
as if it's brand new and there is no partitions on it.
To check, run the following after connecting the drive and post the
output:
sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda

That's normal.
