Odd. I've used on-board AC97 sound on an Asus A8N board and a Creative
SB Live, both in AMD64.

The only little hacks I needed to do were
 * Try to play a sound.
 * Hear the sound come out of the speakers.

What sort of sound hardware do you have?

The OpenOffice printer business is annoying, I'll agree (you'll note I
contributed to the bug you referenced). I do know that I didn't
experience that bug on FC3 (again in 64 bit mode).
