Thanks for the info about Kill I had discovered the command but it seemed to need a job#. I'll look at your suggestions later and probably get back tomorrow sometime.. Have to finish here in a moment..
regarding LAN:  I found the NETWORK and see all the files across the LAN now.. When I try to open one though, it opens an application Open Office for example and then fails to load the file.. maybe a problem with long names though so I'll create some shared files with simple short names and try with those..  This Linux thing is definitly a bit geekie and not for the fainthearted but then I need a bit of a challenge!!!
