can't get online

if i type ifconfig in the terminal I get lots of stuff (about 7 lines)
but nothing that looks like an IP address
and ping gives something like:
$ ping 66.94.234.13
connect: can't connect to network
Normally I connect by pointing my browser to my isp login page, and then
the world is open to me. But no joy with that here.... Should I just try
a different network card?
