Duncan:

If you run ifconfig in a terminal, does it show an IP for eth0?
If yes, can you ping somewhere on your private lan? (If you have one.)
If yes, (or no lan) can you ping somewhere on the internet without
dns? - ping 66.94.234.13
If yes, can you ping using dns? - ping yahoo.com

If yes to all of these, then you are online.  If no to one of them,
let us know which one and what the error message was.
