Breezy Kernel powers off system during boot

I upgraded to 2.6.12-3-686 the other day and ran into tons
of problems. X wouldn't start, for one thing. And my laptop
went into suspend mode and wouldn't come out. Just bad news.

I went back to 2.6.12-1-686. I didn't spend enough time with
-3-686 to figure out what the problem was. I don't really
care: I can't imagine the gains from -1-686 to -3-686 are
enough to justify the debugging time.
