If it helps, I just spent all of yesterday testing out different things,
and finally broke down and rebuilt the kernel with OSS modules. It
seems like as in Debian, I am unable to get ALSA to work with gstreamer,
but I may also need a patch to the source, as I also downloaded the
ubuntu 2.6.11-1 smp kernel, and that did not produce sound in gnome with
ALSA. The only one that did was the 2.6.10-5 powerpc kernel that came
on the original hoary install disks. I wouldn't know on Debian because
I never ran, or know if there is even, a 2.6.10 series kernel, and the
2.6.9 one I ran I used KDE, when I switched to gnome I was already using
a self compiled 2.6.12-rx series kernel
I have also had that problem with /dev/dsp not being there, back when I
first ran debian and KDE, and it was suggested to me that there was a
problem with the ALSA rc scripts not being run at the right time or
something, or generally not working the way they were supposed to. In
the end I had to echo a couple of modules into /etc/modules to get that
to work. In my case snd and snd-powermac, (that would obviously be
different for non-ppc people)
But to wrap this all up, I finally reached the goal of getting something
besides esd to work with gstreamer, it's OSS, and "obsolete" but I think
this will let me have sound in MOL where ESD wouldn't
