I am not 100 percent on this but I think part of the system already uses
esd, since when I renamed it suddenly allowed me to switch to something
other than ESD in the Multimedia Systems Selector, ofcourse now that I
am writing that I can think of many other reasons that would work, one
being that esd doesn't like "playing with others"

Anyways the way that I enabled esd is that I go to the System Menu Drag
Down to Preferences, and then in that menu choose Multimedia Systems
Selector. From there you can choose between whatever sound output you
want. Although it is limited to the plugins that gstreamer has. On a
default Hoary install I believe that the only plugins are ALSA OSS and
ESD. If ESD is not there "aptitude search gstreamer" from the terminal
will show you all the packages that have gstreamer in the name, and
among those will be all the gstreamer plugins, and you will be able to
find the esd one.

Feel free to email me back and tell me how this went or if you need more
help.

As for the ogg format I have no idea, I have no experience with that
format, it may be the file, or it may even be the ogg plugin for rhythmbox.

And as to when you open totem and it says resource busy, if this refers
to audio it sound like you may already have a daemon or something
running that is locking the /dev/dsp. (or whatever your audio device
is) Someone on the list please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd hate to
give the wrong information.
