The only thing X will use the framebuffer for is screen setup. There's
no performance advantage in having the framebuffer enabled (and
currently it'll tend to stop suspend and resume from working desperately
well)

Mm? The binaries on Intel's site are just pre-compiled versions of the
drivers in the latest X.org.
