Gimp crashes because of "umlaute" in the filename!?

aterm is known to not support UTF-8 but mc should do fine. You can use
convmv to convert filenames to UTF-8 and iconv to convert the contents
of files. Look at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/qna/1786.html for
examples.
