One of the biggest pains of the debconf system. I don't like having
intermediate formats for my configuration files. It reminds me of
sendmail and M4.
Modern versions of X (xorg) can do their own autoconfiguration. "X -
configure" while X is not running. I think it defaults to this mode if
it cannot find a config file.
What happens if you just rename your config file before replacing the
card.
