Switching video cards : "HowTo" ??

The first thing I do on a new install is sudo passwd root and set a root
password and then I always use su to become root. This is how I learnt
and it's automatic now for me.
Maybe this is the difference. Is recovery mode a brown screen with a
terminal window in the bottom right hand corner??
