No, recovery mode, is "Recovery mode", as found in GRUB's menu options
at boot. You have 'Normal' mode, to sqart Gnome, 'Recovery mode' which
just gives you the prompt/command line and run level 2 IIRC. Then the
third option Ubuntu gives you at boot is "Memory test" which....tests
the system memory ! ;o)
I think what you describe, sounds like the "Xterm session" that you
select from GDM log-in screen ?
