Novell Linux Desktop isn't GPL? That's news to me, and I'm not sure
how that would be possible.

I don't believe this is a licensing issue. It's a usability issue.
I could care less either way; I use gmail. But the wife and kids
mostly use the ISP's IMAP/POP mail and I have them on Thunderbird
because it runs on either Windows or Linux. That's a big point in
Thunderbird's favour for mixed environments (though I suppose
Evolution's Windows equivalent is Outlook). PDA support is somewhat
shaky and/or broken in both of them and I'd jump on the first one that
really got this right.
