Quake3 will NOT work if you don't have OSS sound drivers. That means 
either having just the OSS drivers or the alsa-oss compatibility 
drivers. My understanding is that ubuntu warty (that I'm running) comes 
with alsa-oss as I haven't had any problems.

The same goes for most 3d games that have come from windows to linux eg 
doom3, RTCW (and all quake clones), half-life (through cedega) and its 
clones etc
