No sound after updating to polypaudio

As a follow up, checking and unchecking the "Enable sound server" in
the gnome-sound-properties dialog box still does not start the
polypaudio daemon.  I don't even see any messages from it in the
system logs.  Starting it via the command line works fine, however.
