No sound after updating to polypaudio

There are still several issues with the polypaudio transition in Hoary.

Personally, because I detest manually invoking the polypaudio daemon
from a terminal emulator every GNOME login, I elect to disable the
setting, prior to every logout (and save the settings), that invokes the
sound server on startup - that way I can simply enable the sound server
from the same Sound menu each time I log in.

It is adequate to use the default settings. Native ALSA is preferable to
ALSA's OSS emulation.
