Installing only X

`apt-get install x-window-system` should get you the X, and
`apt-get install gnome` should get you GNOME. You'll have to
apt-get mozilla-firefox separately, but other than this the
dependency system should make all of the hard work.

x-window-system-core is just the core X; I never installed it diretly,
as x-window-system depends on it (and I don't mind having xterm
installed).

You can try and see. :o)

IMHO the dependency system should do everything for you. If you want to
be more minimalistic, you can try gnome-desktop-environment instead of
gnome.

Same here, although I most probably apt-get install ubuntu-desktop in
the end anyway, as I use most of its dependencies and don't mind having
the (small) rest on the disk.
