Installing only X

Hi,
I'm a new ubuntu user. To be onest I tested It a few month ago but
now I need It :)
I'm a quite experienced linux user (I've been using this OS for about
10 years) but I use it on servers, with a command line interface.
Now I'd like to test It on my notebook, to see if It (linux, ubuntu)
can replace windows.
The problem is: I need X on my notebook, but I don't want alle the
applications that get installed by default in ubuntu (OpenOffice, and
many others): I need firefox and a handful of applications.
Ok, I've tried custom-expert installation. Thats ok. I like it but
now I want to install X (and gnome, and metacity, and fonts).
I need X and everything an X application may reasonably require
(fonts), but I don't want what I don't need.
So I ask you: is there a way (starting from a custom-expert
installation) to install what I need?
I'm quite new to apt, but I see that when I do a "apt-get -s x-window-
system-core" I get some packages installed, but do I need even the
suggested and recommended?
And is It enough to install only x-window-system-core?
Someone has written an howto that explains what is usually required
in this situation?
Thank and bye
P.S. I prefer to start from a base system and add things, than from a
full system and remove.
