Sorry I sent before making this meaning of "modern Linux" as clear as
Hart. In the context of windoze convert, I actually go farther, always
choosing KDE as the least different from what such people are used to.
It has pretty much everything they're used to except the need for
anti-trojan/virus/adware overhead and that miserable anti-standards
Outhouse and/or Outbreak Excess for automatically screwing up email with
top posting and HTML.

My last install went onto a 4G /, Kubuntu, followed by apt-get install
edubuntu-desktop. The result left about 40% freespace on /. Much less
freespace than that and reduced filesystem efficiency can start making
the system feel more sluggish than necessary, hence my recommended
minimum size. Days earlier I tried essentially the same thing several
times different ways according to the recommended minimum, and never got
a complete install in even 2.25G, much less any expectation of
filesystem efficiency.
