He didn't say 'can't/shouldn't' he said 'bad idea'.  Although you can
fit a modern Linux with X and a lightweight window manager on less than
1GB it _would_ be a bad idea as a system to wean someone off of Windows
(which was what the original poster wanted).

If you want a usable system in that context I would say the previous
poster was spot on - 4GB is a minimum.

Engarde Linux is a server system without a desktop and completely
useless for that purpose.
