Wanting to run Linux on laptop (Newbie stuff)

Why do you need Windows to access the BIOS? You hit F2 or whatever
when you see the BIOS power-up screen and that drops you into the BIOS
menus directly -- no need for XP.

The only possible senario I can imagine is if you want to be able to
flash update the BIOS and your BIOS vendor only permits this by
running a 32-bit Win executable. But this hardly seems worth going to
the trouble of maintaining a dual-boot setup. Perhaps there might be
compelling reasons for dual-boot, but this doesn't sound like one to
me.
