I think that there should be a small app to walk folk through it on the 
bare bones installation. Make the app as dummy-friendly as you like - 
the more info the better. (Yes, I know about Synaptic and friends, but 
something much smaller - with a pointer to Synaptic or aptitude search.)

# aptitude install kubuntu-desktop
although I prefer kde-core and build from there
