Voting for packages, was: Ubuntu is under attack

I started this thread because I discovered mailx and MTA packages were
missing. Whether the MTA is postfix, sendmail or some other thing is a
matter of choice, not relevant to the discussion.
What needs discussing - hopefully brought to the attention of the gods of
ubuntu - is why a useful (and harmless?) package should suddenly disappear.
Why NOT have an MTA? Why NOT have mailx? They are not inconsequential
choices. Are they less important than the seventeen games included in the
standard CD install?
When the root terminal disappeared from the menu, it wasn't hard to
understand the thinking, but loosing the MTA/mailx seems like dumbing down
to me, and I believe it should be avoided at all costs.
If nobody mentions it we are just failing to vote.
