This computer was upgraded from Hoary.

I'll try your suggestion as soon as the problem reasserts itself.  It's
running quite well now, of course.  :-|

I hope that gam isn't the cause though.  I remember all the fun that I
had under Warty with fam not finishing tasks and making it very
difficult to unmount a usb drive.  I was very happy when Hoary went with
gam because that fixed everything.  (Until now.)
