I have the same problem with VM 5.5 except that i installed from Flight
2 CD, i didn't upgrade from breezy...

i tried what you have suggested:
edit /etc/mkinitramfs/modules and add mptspi to it
run update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.15-8-386 (it's 8 for me not 7)

did not work :(
