upgrading kernel in VMware Virtual machine of dapper kills the VM

This matches the mptspi module. It has an entry for your device, so it
should be loading.

Can you add mptspi to /etc/mkinitramfs/modules, and run this command:

update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.15-7-386

Reboot and see if that works.
