I can't seem to build pine on ubuntu the saga: now it's cc errors??
I got slightly off topic in a thread about getting mc and asked for
advice getting pine (the last of my "must have" console applications I
need to make ubuntu bearable...
I asked about a U Wash .deb file and a kind hearted list member replied...
It would appear that (in a previous thread) on Dec 12, Hodgins Family did say:
>Generally, attempts to cross-hybridize Debian and Ubuntu carry a caveat!--- be
>vewy cawefuw!

>Could give it a shot just to see what happens OR whip over to here:

So I thought the wise thing to do was to attempt to figure out how to
build pine...
I compared the instructions in the above quoted link with what I could
find in U Wash's pages, and both sets of instructions were in basic
agreement. (provided that "slx" was the correct linux argument to pines
build command for ubuntu.) U wash also suggested doing a "build clean"
first however. Which is how I leaned that I needed to do an
"apt-get install make" first. then on my next build attempt I got a
warning about not having openssl... "apt-get" again... But I got the build
warning again, This led me to some info on U Wash's page that said that
some linux use a non standard directory for openssl (IE NOT
/usr/local/ssl) which didn't exist on my machine and the man page didn't
say where openssl put it. So I searched around and found an /etc/ssl
with an certs dir in it so I added "SSLDIR" to the build command
"./build slx SSLDIR=/etc/ssl" And got a bit further. But it seamed I
also didn't have cc. So I did an apt-get for gcc. and tried again...
I got further this time... the 1st thing in the terminal window buffer
that looked like an error to me was:
In file included from osdep.c:41:
nl_unix.c: In function 'strcrlfcpy':
nl_unix.c:41: warning: pointer targets in assignment differ in signedness
There then followed many lines ending in "differ in signedness" <see
URL below for full error text...>
Then quite a few other errors prefixed with various .c and .h filenames
And finally terminating with:
+---------------------------------------------+
Problems building c-client

Please check the output above for a
possible explanation for this failure
+---------------------------------------------+
<Wimper>: could someone who has a clue please look at the error message
text at the url below and let me in on the bad news??? the root shell
window snipage begins with the "apt-get install gcc" command and ends at
my wits end.
Thanks
Joe
