Mac mini, Ubuntu splash screen halts video output until X is started (Re: Video output is stopped on Ubuntu 5.10 (breezy) ...)

Any idea how to get out of frame buffer mode?

Also, on a more theoretical level, why would the Mac mini install
default to frame buffer mode? Presumably this isn't the most "user
friendly" (as in scary to the neophyte linuxer) mode available.
