Repositiries

AFAIK there is no community or non-free in Ubuntu. Those are from Debian.
Ubuntu uses restricted, universe, and multiverse. 

Hate to sound like a canned response, but it's not a good idea to mix
Debian and Ubuntu repositories. That's an easy way to cause a serious
headache. Especially if you use dist-upgrade which is the case when using
the upgrade packages feature in Synaptic.
    apt-get install pounding-migraine

Could be some logic in Synaptic that knows there are no sections with those
names in Ubuntu repos, and rejects the change. Or could just be divine
intervention preventing you from doing that, who knows? If you feel Synaptic
isnt working correctly, submit a bug report. But in some circles, even
mentioning mixing repos is an easy way to get unsupported.
