Thanks for the links... 

As to NOT reading all the ubuntu docs before installing it as one of my
4 active linux distros on my multi-boot pc I can only plead that thanks
to being out of work for about a week due to a knee injury, I have a
narrow window of time to get it running and configured such as I can
stand to use it before I'll have to go back to work. If I spent that
time trying to pre-read all the docs I'd run out of time before I
started, & I doubt I'd get another chance to spend more than a half hr at
a time on it for almost another year.

So it was try to wing it or forget about it.
