Did you try CTRL-ALT-F1, CRTL-ALT-BACKSPACE, CTRL-\, or just plain old
CTRL-C?
I got the blank screen, too. There are several more things to try.
You can select the boot option for rescue mode and chmod 000
/etc/init.d/kdm, which will stop the screen from running the graphics.
I usually find a way to turn off the display while trying to make X
work, so the bootup doesn't lock me out.
