Nightmare printing to Windows printers

After two days of googling, studying various pages and how-tos, I've
reached an impasse.

I have two printers on my XP machine and I am now able to use them with
my Ubuntu machine with drivers recommended by
http://www.linuxprinting.org/

Sort of!

1. Lexmark Z23, USB, driver=lxm3200 (tweaked). Ubuntu can see it and
wake it up, but it doesn't attempt to print anything--it just spits out
a blank sheet of paper.

2. Samsung ML-1440, USB, driver=gdi, set to default. Ubuntu can use it
and I can print out all the test pages I want, but I can't print from
applications, e.g: I can create a document in Open Office and hit print
but absolutely nothing happens.

In both cases, the printer properties will not retain information--I
have to re-enter username and password for each and every item I try to
print, even successive test pages.

I've browsed throught cups.conf, but haven't noticed anything I would
change without advice to do so.

As an aside, I read about browsing to localhost:631 to access CUPS to
manage printers, but it keeps asking me for a username and password that
I've never had the opportunity to configure. It won't accept either of
the usernames and passwords that I use.

Thanks again!

You WILL be assimilated!

Of course, if you pay exhorbitant prices for brand name products, go to Starbucks for five-dollar cups of coffee, watch Fox sit-coms or use AOL, you probably already have been assimilated! Wake up!!!
