Here is a link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WindowsDualBootHowTo
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Installation
I would advise against Windows partition tools, since most (99 percent)
of the problems that users report on the forums regarding this aspect
involves non-linux partitioning tools.
A lot of work has gone into the installer and it works very well. As
it has been said, the installer's partitioner will automagically
partition an NTFS partition if it needs the space to install Ubuntu.
Be aware of what you are doing, but most of the time, you can take the
default and you will be good to go.
Also, probably the majority of Ubuntu installs involve such
dual-booting with windows (or another OS) so do not worry. It is quite
safe.
(I still reccommend you do a backup of your important data. I am very
confident, but not foolish)
