The Ubuntu installer can do the partition resizing for you while
installing Ubuntu; at least it did it when I installed Ubuntu on my
Dell laptop using Hoary.

So during the install, at the repartition step of the install, I asked
the installer to resize my XP ntfs partition to 50% of its original
size, then told Ubuntu to install in the freed space. At the end of
the installation I had a dual-boot laptop, half using my original XP,
the other half with my new Ubuntu installation, and a grub menu to
select between the two OSes at boot time.

So in my case it was a painless process.

BUT, before trying this or something else. DO BACKUPS OF YOUR
IMPORTANT FILES IN XP. You never know what could go wrong and
playing with hard drive partitions.
