X doesn't start

Hi folks,

After installing Ubuntu on a new computer with ATI RADEON X700 PRO 
graphic card, X doesn't start. I've tried to figure out what the 
problem is by looking at the config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf as well as 
the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log with to no avail.

It's interesting to note however that by doing a live-expert start of 
the Live CD, I managed to get it working. Here are the parameters I 
used:

Attempt autodetect video hardware: no
Select desired X server driver: vesa
Enter identifier for your video card: ATI Radeon X 700 Pro
Specify BusID of video card: PCI:1:0:0
Enter amount of memory in Kb: 131072 (the manufacturer says 128MB, so I 
did 128x1024)
Use kernel framebuffer device interface: no
Select the X.org server modules that should be loaded by default: 
GLcore, bitmap, ddc, dri, extmod, freetype, glx, int10, type1 and vbe. 
I didn't select dbe, record and v4l.
Write default Files section to config file? yes
Write DRI section to config file? yes
Attempt monitor autodetection: Generic Monitor
Select the video modes: 1280x1024 (I unselected the default choices 
because the ration is not the same as the one given by the vendor. 
1280x1024 is given by the vendor)
Choose method for selecting monitor characteristics: Advanced
Horizontal sync range: 30-82
Vertical refresh range: 56-76
(I got this data from a knoppix live CD which gave me these ranges). 
The data sheet of the manufacturer just mentions 1280x1024 @60Hz.
Write monitro sync ranges to config file? yes
Color depth: 24

I'm attaching the two files mentioned above for your review. I'd be 
glad to find a solution to this problem.
