OK, got it. I'm using an XFS root filesystem, which necessitates lilo,
since XFS and grub don't get along. Now lilo doesn't get along with
initramfs, which was switched to not too long ago. It's all in this bug:
http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13365 along with a couple of
workarounds. I recommend the second (setting the append in lilo.conf)
workaround, since it's working for me. Hope this helps...
