Hi Michael,

Thanks again for your help. I had the same instinct, so I did reinstall 
GDM without issue. During the process, it removed Gnome-audio and 
replaced it with a different sound library. I dimly remember installing 
Gnome-audio in the recent past, but I don't remember the circumstances
