Do you know of anyplace that has an exhaustive list of chipsets and
what options need to be passed at boot to make things work? I'm having
the same issue as the original poster. I boot from cd (and have tried
every noapic/nolapic/acpi=off option), set my language and location,
and get presented with a message stating that the installer can't find
a cd drive. When trying to configure the cdrom drive manually (and
unsuccessfully), I was presented with this message:

"Unable to load some modules. Linux kernel modules needed to drive
some of your hardware are not available yet. Simply proceeding with
the install may make the modules available later. The unavailable
modules, and devices that need them are: ide-mod (Linux IDE driver),
ide-probe-mod (Linux IDE probe driver), ide-detect (Linux IDE
detector), ide-floppy (Linux IDE floppy)."

The computer is a Toshiba Portege S100. Intel Centrino, nVidia video,
SATA HDD, IDE (atapi) *I think* Matshita UJDA75 DVD/CDRW, 512Mb RAM.

This is the first machine I've ever tried to install Ubuntu on that
hasn't worked flawlessly (I know, I'm probably spoiled), so I'm a bit
stuck.
